From 8 to 10 September 2025, Gaborone hosted celebrations marking the 34th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence, which brought together diplomats, government officials, and representatives of Botswana’s cultural and religious communities. The central highlight was the exhibition “Icons on Ammunition Boxes” by Ukrainian artists Oleksandr Klymenko, Sofiia Atlantova, and Herman Klymenko, presented on the African continent for the very first time. Created on wooden panels from military ammunition boxes, these works transform symbols of death into images of faith and life, carrying a powerful message about the strength of art and human resilience.

🔹 8 September — The Botswana National Museum hosted the exhibition opening and reception, which featured a prayer for peace in Ukraine, remarks by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Botswana and the Minister of International Relations of Botswana, Hon. Dr. Phenyo Butale, poetry readings, a performance by the Milidzo ye Bakalanga Choir, and a unique act by His Majesty Malatsi Siwa, King of the Basarwa.

🔹 9 September — At the Alliance Française Gaborone, the documentary “The Saints Are Watching”, dedicated to the “Icons on Ammunition Boxes” project, was screened, followed by a Q&A discussion with the artists and the director.

🔹 10 September — At Enko Botho School, the Ukrainian artists met with senior students, sharing reflections on art as a social phenomenon and a tool of resilience.

In total, four works were sold, with proceeds to be directed towards the rehabilitation of wounded Ukrainian soldiers and children.
