Vyshyvanka Day 2025: Ukrainian embroidery on the runway in Gaborone
19 May 2025 18:00

On 15 May 2025, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Botswana hosted a cultural event in Gaborone to mark Vyshyvanka Day — a celebration of Ukrainian embroidered clothing and national identity.

The event featured a fashion show with 24 local models, symbolically reflecting Ukraine’s 24 regions. Guests had the opportunity to see contemporary interpretations of the traditional vyshyvanka, watch short video presentations about Ukrainian dress, and visit a pop-up store with embroidered items available for purchase.

The rooftop venue — Sundown Bar at Hotel 4.30 — was transformed with Ukrainian visual elements, including sunflowers, embroidery, and national colors, creating a warm and immersive cultural space in the heart of Botswana’s capital.

Among the guests were members of the diplomatic corps, media, academia, business, and the cultural sector.

As stated by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Botswana, H.E. Dr. Oleksiy Syvak:

“The vyshyvanka is not just clothing. It is a national code — a symbol of strength, dignity, and historical memory. That is why Ukrainians will always stand for their culture.”

The event served as a vivid example of impactful cultural diplomacy, allowing Ukraine to be seen and understood through the universal language of beauty, tradition, and human connection.
